Legends of Tomorrow Season 1, Episode 5 “Fail-Safe” (spoilers)

Bechdel-Wallace Score: 1/3 – I don’t remember the two women on the show talking to each other at any point. Boo.

Shukla Score: 3/3 – Well hey, they finally gave the two main people of color a scene – a couple of scenes! – together. This shouldn’t be an event, but it is. Hopefully they will keep this up, but then again it seems to have come at the expense of having the show’s two women together this week.

Russo Score: 3/3 – Since I have now decided that being identified as bisexual at some point in the season (pilot, part 1) counts towards the first point, this episode aced the rest of the test by having Sara be a substantial and significant part of the show, without her being a caricature. I may be about to change my stance on the “at some point in the season” identification though, because for real they need to re-up Sara being B from the LGBTQ.

Kittehs: 😺😺😺/5 – This was a good episode, one of the best yet. It wasn’t as noisy with sub-plots as others and the team seems to have hit the working together point, which is really nice. Specifically the Jax/Martin relationship improved a lot this week. Yay!

Low points: Come on now, no way two guys can get into a punching and wrestling bout at the spa without the towels falling off. That was just absurd.

Highlights: Dr. Stein got propositioned by a brilliant, beautiful Russian scientist. Sure, it was to become part of a living nuclear weapon, but it was still kinda awesome. The team learning to care about each other and work together is a welcome development and was easily my favorite part of the episode. Also, hey, it is nice to have a bad guy you can kill almost every week and he just comes back. Very satisfying!

Dad edits: Well, prison beatings and torture. Some weeks this show is fine for my kid, other weeks I think I would need to edit so much that there wouldn’t be much of a story left. I will find a way, though, just so he can see the dystopian-future Green Arrow reveal at the end. (Hey, I said spoilers at the beginning.)

Legends of Tomorrow airs on The CW on Thursdays at 8/7c
