Review: The Flash, “Welcome to Earth-2”

Progressive/nerd/parent review

Wow, this episode was a trip.
Wow, this episode was a trip.

The Flash Season 2, Episode 13 “Welcome to Earth-2” (spoilers)

Bechdel-Wallace Score: 2/3 – It gets confusing when there are two versions of Earth in the same episode. Were there four women, or two, in this episode? Anyway, only on Earth-2 did they speak to each other, but they were surrounded by men and more or less talking about a man so I scored it a 2.

Shukla Score: 3/3 – Iris and Joe West had some good Earth-2 dialogue during this episode. Well written, well played. πŸ‘

Russo Score: 0/3 – Yet another week without any LGBTQ representation. Apparently the writers on Earth-2 are as feeble-minded about representation and their counterparts on Earth-1.

Kittehs: πŸ˜ΊπŸ™€πŸ˜»πŸ™€πŸ˜»/5 – I was excited about this episode at first, then as it got going I oscillated between shock and adoration. This wasn’t the best episode of the show, but it was the best episode of the season so far, and I am really looking forward to the second half next week.

Low points: I got nothing. This episode was a romp. Even the Earth-2 Jay / Earth-1 Caitlin dynamic was working well this week. No lows in sight.

Highlights: Double Cisco! OMG! “Are you Cloud-City-Vadering me right now?” It is like he is in my mind! The whole episode was great. I love it when the writers take high concept and integrate it with fan service and somehow still manage to tell a good story all at the same time. It’s like my imagination just got a massage. Every Earth-2 character version was not only funny, but compelling, and good use was made of the fact that we viewers both care, and do not care, about the alternate versions. I could go on, but I’m just gushing at this point. Go to Hulu and watch this thing if you haven’t already.

Speculation: The relationship between Jay Garrick and Zoom is going to somehow be part of the Zoom identity reveal twist, I’m sure of it.

Dad edits: A couple of close calls, but nothing that really needs to be skipped. My kid loves Firestorm, and also bad guys, so I think he is going to really dig on Deathstorm.

The Flash airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW
