Review: Supergirl, Episode 7 “Human for a Day”

Progressive/nerd/parent review

Supergirl Season 1, Episode 7 “Human for a Day”

Bechdel-Wallace Score: 2.5/3

Shukla Score: 1/3

Russo Score: 0/3

Kittens: 😺😺😺😺/5

This episode had no LGBTQ representation. There were two people of color, but they were never in the same scene. The show would have a scene that aced the test for representing women, but I docked one half point because the episode also showed Kara putting up with yet more slut-shaming from Winn (over a hug!). I awarded the episode four out of five kittens because my excitement to see J’onn J’onzz kept me glued to the screen and because the DEO/Jemm stuff was good TV.

Highlights: Alex got to be a badass the whole episode, which was great to see. Her ambush of Jemm was really cool, even if it didn’t work out as planned. Kara’s (de-powered) confrontation with an armed looter was surprisingly well done; I definitely got some feels. Oh yeah and J’ONN J’ONZZ SHOWED UP!!!! Awesome.

Low points: If grand conflict creates drama, then petty conflict creates melodrama. The Winn-loves-Kara thing is bad enough as a retread of the nerd-can’t-get-the-girl plot device, but the way Winn keeps going off on Kara for being friends with Jimmy is really pissing me off. In this episode, Winn’s outburst is set off by Kara and Jimmy sharing a hug. A hug! If the goal is to make me hope Winn gets killed off, it is working. I doubt that is the goal though.

Dad edits: Nothing to take out, but we definitely had a chat about the guy dying in the street. And I made it really clear that Winn was being a rude and making bad choices during his whole fit. I may have even made a remark about wishing he would fall down that elevator shaft, so maybe more self-editing was what was needed this week.
